History Fairs are becoming more and more popular as a means of integrating research skills with the history curriculum. Kosty's handbook is appropriate for teachers of middle and high school students (grades 6-12) and provides clear instructions for initiating, coordinating, and evaluating a history fair. Beginning in the fall, students choose topics for research that are based on an annual theme. Working in groups or individually, students develop projects in the form of historical papers, electronic media documentaries, original performances, or museum-style exhibits. The collected materials in this book were developed over several years of classroom testing. They provide a comprehensive unit of study in which students are required to develop a number of skills simultaneously, without relying on boring "skills lessons." All activities are tied to the student's own research topic. Teachers learn how to structure and organize their classes, prepare parents and administration for the event, and encourage students towards advanced state and national competitions. Includes: - Handouts for students - Teacher materials, forms, and checklists - Tips for keeping students motivated - Nuts and bolts of running the fair - Advice about coaching - List of fair topics - Bibliography and glossary
